Xander glanced at Sheena. She was holding up much better than he anticipated. He had expected to have a hysterical woman on his hands. His muierimei was anything but.

Turning his focus to the marshal, he found the man looking back.

Bast cleared his throat. “I have to call my director and let him know I’m taking Sheena off the grid. If I don’t, he’ll organize a statewide if not nationwide search for her. That’ll make hiding her from the mob exponentially more difficult.”

He didn’t respond immediately. “I’ll make the call and hold the phone for you. One wrong word and I’ll end the call.”

The marshal nodded his acquiescence. “The phone is in my front right jacket pocket.”

Plucking the phone out, Xander tapped the screen. “It requires a fingerprint.”

Bast cocked a brow. “I work for the government on high-security cases. Did you expect less?”

“No. I guess not. I’m going to release your hands on the assumption you’re an honorable man.” Xander took Sheena’s hand and gave the marshal a look that made lesser men pee their pants. “Sheena believes you’re trustworthy. Don’t make her a liar. I won’t take it well.”

He waited for Bast to turn sideways so he could cut the tie. The marshal rubbed his wrists before taking a breath and making the call.

“Bast! What the hell happened?”

“Comeaux found us again.”

“Shit. I just talked to Terry. I was hoping his story was an exaggeration. Where’s the witness?”

“She’s with me.”

“Where are you taking her? I’ll have a team waiting when you get there.”

“That won’t be necessary. I have a private team taking care of her protection. You must have realized by now that we have a mole in the office. I can’t take the chance that her location will be disclosed again. I’m sorry, sir, but I’m taking her underground until this is over.”

Xander heard a long sigh.

“I don’t like it, but you’re right. Let me know if you need anything and watch your back. Trust no one at the office until we know how high up the chain this goes.”

“Thank you, sir. I’m ditching my phone, but I’ll be in touch when I’m able to use a secure line.”

“Good idea. They could use its GPS to track you. I’ll put in an order for a new one, and it’ll be waiting for you when you return. Good luck, Bast.”

“Thank you.” He ended the call.

Xander gave Bast a nod and powered the phone off. Then he turned in his seat and without a word, rolled down his window and tossed the phone out. That done, he pulled his own phone from his pocket. “I’m reporting in. Is there anything either of you want me to tell Etienne?”

Nick scowled and shook his head.

“Could you say hello to Janet for me?” Derick asked a little dreamily.

Nick groaned dramatically.

Derick smiled smugly at his brother. “You’re just grumpy because Jacqueline didn’t give you a goodbye kiss. If you stopped acting like an ass every time you see her, she might let you get within ten feet of her.
